Change of residence registration
Since April 2007, EU citizens no longer need a residence permit (permesso di soggiorno) in Italy. The same registration requirements therefore apply as for the local population. In the case of a permanent change of residence to Italy, this must be reported in person, or by an authorized representative, within 20 days of moving to the relevant registration office (ufficio anagrafe).
If you are moving with your entire family, it is sufficient for one family member to register the change of residence on behalf of the others. However, transferring your residence (residenza) should be carefully considered, as it has both legal and tax implications. While you benefit from lower property transfer taxes when purchasing real estate in Italy, you also become automatically subject to taxation in Italy on all of your worldwide income. This rule also applies to inheritance and gift tax (tassa di successione / donazione).
In addition, changing your residence may affect the payment of your pension (pensione). If the move is not intended to be permanent but only for a longer stay in Italy, it is sufficient to submit a declaration of temporary residence (dichiarazione di domicilio temporaneo) at the registration office, presenting your ID.
