Moving without a moving company

f you decide to organize your move to Italy without a moving company, there are some important rules to keep in mind.

Driving license categories
Remember that driving vehicles with trailers often requires different license categories than for your car. Make sure you have the correct license for the moving vehicle you plan to use.

Maximum load weight
Always keep an eye on the maximum permissible load weight of your moving truck while packing. Even if there seems to be space left for another box or two, you must stop loading as soon as the permitted total weight is reached. Trucks are strictly controlled, especially in Austria, and an overloaded moving vehicle can cause you a lot of trouble. In addition to fines, you may even be prevented from continuing your journey if your license does not cover the total weight reached.

Driving bans
Your move to Italy may take you through several countries. Be sure to check the specific driving bans before departure. As a general rule, there is a driving ban on Sundays and public holidays between 00:00 and 22:00 for all trucks over 7.5 tons as well as for all trucks with trailers. During holiday periods, some countries impose stricter driving bans or at least general overtaking bans, which means you may only be able to proceed slowly.
